After a long hot summer weekend in London, U2 return to The Joshua Tree Tour for a wet Wednesday evening in Berlin. Unlike Twickenham Stadium, which had 8:15 PM starts due to 10:30 PM curfews, the Olympic Stadium has a much later 8:55 PM kick-off, which results in the band playing in darkness for much of the set, unlike the UK shows.
Highlights of the set include several unique song references and a first in U2 concert history -- a rare double snippet of David Bowie's 'Heroes' during Bad, both the English version, soon followed by the German version, 'Helden", and the first time the same song is covered twice in a U2 show in two different languages. Later in the set, "Beautiful Day" is snippeted with Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," another nod to the influence of Berlin on U2 and some of their influences. Finally, "Mysterious Ways" is snippetted with "Miss You" and two more Bowie songs, "This Is Not America" and "Young Americans."
Prior to "Ultraviolet," Bono leads the capacity crowd through a rendition of "Happy Birthday" to Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who celebrates her 20th birthday today.
