After three one-stop cities, U2 reaches Los Angeles, the first city to get two Joshua Tree tour shows.
Before U2 takes the stage, one of the pre-show songs is Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun," a tribute to Chris Cornell, who died three days earlier. That's not the only tribute: Bono dedicates "Running To Stand Still" to "the lion that was Chris Cornell," his wife Vicky and their children. And at the end of The Joshua Tree set, before the band leaves the stage, Bono dedicates the gig to Guus Van Hove & Helena Nuellett, two U2 fans who died years ago while trying to find the site in the California desert where the album photography was done. "Ultraviolet" is dedicated to Bono's daughters Jordan and Eve, both of whom are at the show. Bono namechecks Alicia Keys, who's at the show, during "One."
"Bad" is a surprise addition to the encore, having been played in the fourth slot at the past two shows on this tour. When the song ends, the band gathers to begin waving goodbye, but huddles quickly and decides to add one more surprise: "I Will Follow," which was also played as a bonus song two shows ago in Seattle. Meanwhile, dropped entirely is the new song, "The Little Things That Give You Away," which was on the printed setlist and had been played at all three previous shows.
