After canceling its appearance at last year's KROQ-FM "Acoustic Christmas" concert (due to Bono's bike accident), U2 makes good by scheduling a KROQ-sponsored club date at the Roxy. Tickets are only available to KROQ listeners, and only to people who live in California.
U2 starts the small club show with songs from their early, club-playing days. "The Ocean" is played for the first time since the Vertigo tour, December 9, 2005. At the end of "The Ocean," Bono recites Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep, a poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, likely in memory of Dennis Sheehan, U2's tour manager who died a day earlier. "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" is played for the first time since August 21, 2001, on the Elevation tour. Even "Elevation" and "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of," neither of which has been played during the Innocence + Experience tour, get played early in the set. Bono dedicates the latter song to Sheehan and, after the song, offers his thanks to everyone who expressed sympathy toward U2 in the past 24 hours. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is played old-style, electric, not the stripped down version of the I+E tour. U2 leaves the stage for about two minutes after "Out Of Control." Bono goes into the audience and does a bit of crowdsurfing during "Vertigo," falling backwards and letting the fans hold him up.
Colin Farrell, Jack Nicholson, Chris Martin, Tom Morello and Courtney Love are among the many celebrities in attendance.
