The Wellington Winter Show Buildings were built in 1928 for the Wellington Winter Shows which were a kind of fair with exhibitions and carnival rides. The buildings on the site hosted many different types of events including concerts, though they were famously not suited for that type of show. The faciliy closed in 1996. The Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre opened on the site in 1998.
