I saw U2 in San Diego on Wednesday and felt the show was lacking a spark. The band seemed uncomfortable with the set list, things never really gelled and took off. There wasn't a good flow to the songs, and their staging seemed just that, stagy. I chaulked it up to rustiness, and figured they'd work it out over the next 10 shows or so... I had tickets for their next 3 shows so I was looking forward to seeing the small adjustments with each show, as they searched for the right combination of songs, staging and emotion. Well... last night's show at the Pond wasn't a small adjustment. They took the engine out, bore in 16 more cylinders, reinstalled it under a shiny new hood and took it out for a spin. The result was an edgy, emotional rollercoaster ride of a show, that blew the doors off of any U2 show I've ever seen. And I've been fortunate enough seen U2 more than 10 times, starting with the Zoo TV tour. Jesus, these guys know what to do.
