Been to many concerts in the past twenty odd years, big and small, in UK, US and SA - needless to say many were bands that I grew up with from the 70s and 80s. Standout highlights are, Pink Floyd at Wembley stadium in 98, and last night, U2 at Cape Town Stadium. As a fellow 50 year old, I was amazed at how well the U2 members had aged and how well they still performed. Bono delivered a faultless performance both in musicianship and his rapport with the audience. The African flavour, with Mandela and Tutu inserts was tastefully done adding value to the overall experience. I sat directly behind the stage, halfway up the stand, a perfect view, in excellent value seats. I would say the stage was closer to us than to those who faced the band, because of some extra standing areas in front of the band. The stage is a technical marvel and has awesome fire power, especially in the sound volume department. As much as I enjoyed the show, I have to say that my ears felt as if they had been assaulted for 2 hours, and are still recovering. Parts of my body seemed to vibrate intermittently, while the bass just kept hitting me in the chest and stomach. For outdoor sound, to have that kind of force, their must be serious power behind the scenes. I have no qualms with loud, but don't hurt my ears. Thanks U2, your fantastic stage investment and travels to South Africa demonstrate your commitment to your fans and your craft. I solute you.
