About Bono remarking on the negative energy of the fans up front: I remember Bono pausing mid-song to break up a fight in the front of the crowd. A lot of people there must not have known U2 yet. Just rock concert rowdies, wasted on drugs. But many of us were thrilled to be there, and anyone who listened has loved them ever after.
