U2 just seem to turn it on so well in their own backyard!
I flew in from Manchester on Saturday morning, and read some below-par reviews of their Friday night show. (Still a great show - but just missing that little bit extra that makes them U2)
As I had experienced the same sense of disappointment (you can sense so much from the crowd reaction) with the first Manchester show (14th June - please see my review), and the 2nd Manchester show was so much better (I was babysitting and missed it! Never again!) - I was optimistic that U2 would pull off a first rate performance.
When U2 do this - it is awesome! AND THEY DID!!!
The 9pm start helped as later on in the show the light effects were seen to their full effect.
I was there with my mate Nik (we'd been to Slane 1 in 2001) and we agreed it was on a par. A mini pub-crawl around Dublin got us in the mood, and despite having seats about as far back as you can get in Croker, we felt as much a part of the show as when we are up front.
Music wise - what more can say? Great to see Out Of Control and Electric Co. Other highlights were All I Want Is You, COBL, LAPOE, Streets, the Zoo TV mini-set, Party Girl (Matt - you are a star!), Vertigo.
Superb sound, great vibe all night, and a wonderful set design. All in all - 100% full on U2!
After the show we lost the crowds by finding a nice little pub tucked away in between the streets near the ground - a bit of local knowledge took us there - where we continued to enjoy the black stuff long into the night....
