The U2 concert that I attended in Salt Lake City on November 9th, 2001 was truly like a spiritual experience.
It seeemed like once U2 came out on that stage time stood still for 2 and a half hours. The first song was Elevation, once that started not one person in that arena was sitting, everyone was dancing around me, including me with my well practiced choreography to that song! Beautiful Day followed and it sounded like it came from the heavens, a full chorus of voices from the crowd joined in, this would set a precedence for the whole evening.
Bono and Edge worked the crowd all night, Bono would play off the general seating people below, one lucky girl got plucked from below and got to slow dance to Stuck in a Moment with him, her hand found its way to his behind, something I'm sure many girls wouldn't be able to resist either!
Bono brought up faith and how he believed in it, he talked about love and peace and the Sept. 11th attacks, always in his graceful tactful way, the crowd was at his feet and were hanging on his every word through out the whole show.
Another poignant moment was when he brought up his father's death and how the song Kite was sort of a gift from him.
There was an outer heart ring around the stage and this was the walkway for Bono and Edge, mostly Bono all night.
I was so impressed by the symbol they used, a heart, how many supposed cool rock stars would do that?
They are not ashamed to show their compassion and love, even as a big rock act, so admirable...
When they played Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bono asked the audience to join in and sing it with him and how it could be a prayer for world peace.
This man is so charasmatic, he could run for pope!!!
There were 2 encores, they ended with Walk On, beautiful ending, as they were leaving the crowd was going crazy, rumbling the floor and clapping so hard, almost begging them not to leave, Bono came back to the microphone and said "Wow", I think the fervor of the Salt Lake crowd blew him and U2 away, it was apparent how this band means so much to these people and that they are loved so much here.
This concert was the most mind blowing, soul moving show I have ever seen, I felt like I was in a baptist church, with everyone clapping and singing to the songs, we were all celebrating something, but you couldn't put your finger on it, there was this divine energy flowing through that arena and Bono and U2 were the master of it, they knew that they could release it for 2 and a half hours.
I am still reeling from it and probably will be for a long long time...
I'm left with ringing ears and no money in my pockets, but it was truly, truly, worth it.
