Todays date is the 27th of April 2006 and Ive only now gotten around to posting a review of this concert.
Im Irish but had been living in New York for about 2 months at the time of this gig. I remember hearing the rumours a while before and I thought it would be in Washington Square Park.
I remember booking an internet appointment at 2pm and logging on to see what the story was, To my amazment it stated that the it was starting at 3. I rushed straight out the door and caught the 4 train to Fulton St in Manhattan. All the while thinking Ive missed this. Transferred over to the A train to get off at High St in Brooklyn.
I didnt have a clue of the area at this time and I was running around not knowing where I was at.
Somebody saw me running and asked "are you looking for the concert" i said yes to which he replied "me too" Anyway we lined up but never did I think wed get in. The guys name was Chuck and he had skipped work.
Eventually we got in and setteld around the middle of the field. Someone saw the truck coming over the Manhatten Bridge.
Ill never forget the amazing panoramic backdrop. Bono stated that City of Blinding Lights was written about the skyline behind us.
It was a cold evening really sharp and Bono made a joke about how Larry Mullen is the only man tough enough to wear a t shirt in New York in the middle of November.
When they finished the HTDAAB set people thought it was over the I instantly recognised the atmospherics that lead to Out of Control.
Just a beautiful evening. I stayed in the park as long as I could soaking up the atmosphere on a bench beside the East River until a security guard told me to leave. Then it started to drizzel lightly as I got lost walking back to the A train.
About 2 months later I ended up working on a building site in that very area (Brooklyn Heights)
I have lovely memories of my time in that area, someday Ill be back there.
