first of all, i have to say that i have no idea what the guy who wrote the first review was smoking. i've been to many a great u2 show in my day, and i can say without question that tonight was the best i've ever seen.
i will admit that my positioning had something to do with it. on the right of the heart against the railing (props to everyone around me who kept their composure in the midst of the craziness...) but there was something electric in the air tonight. it started when, at the end of 'elevation', bono finally recognized the sixers singing out, "ELEVATION! SIXERNATION!" it rocked. the crowd responded by belting out the "BEAT LA!" chant. when the crowd finished, bono said, "what was that again, could you repeat it?" of course, philly obliged. bono then said that when U2 plays the Sixers win. i don't know how much actual research this stunning fact was based on, but i'll go with it. he said he hopes that U2 is the rabbit's foot for the sixers.
he than said that it's good that philly was so energetic, because he's pretty sick. the crowd responded and was at peak intensity all night, singing every lyric at the top of their lungs, and pogo sticking away to all of the faster numbers. but it was the slower moments that stole my heart. i got "BAD" the first night, but tonight it was replaced by the best live version i've ever heard of "All I Want Is You", with bono giving the crowd a long sing-a-long at the end.
"New Years Day" was a very pleasant surprise as well.
Anyway, I'll write more tomorrow. I'm in need of some deep REM sleep. Philly...you represented tonight, and the band gave it all back!
