Third of seven Boston Vertigo shows, #15 lifetime. Patty and I brought MaryC to her first U2 show, sat in Zone 8 (club seats opposite the stage), an amazing front view.
A spectacular show, disappointing only in comparison to the phenomenal previous show (Boston2). The band seemed very relaxed – almost too relaxed. Rumor is that the end-of-tour party was actually held after the previous show, and it seemed like tonight’s show was always just a split second away from coming apart at the seams. The band members seemed out of sync with each other more than once, most noticeably when Larry came back from the bridge of Electric Co a full eight bars early. As a result, they stayed on the main stage more than the previous shows – even Until The End of the World was done there.
That said, it was a fun show with lots of “end of tour” stuff, like Bono breaking out the champagne and shots of the stage crew on the overhead monitors during One.
Highlights were opening with Love and Peace, the two kids on-stage during Into The Heart, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses performed for the first time in over ten years, and the Boston tradition of Party Girl. As rarely as this song is performed, I think I’ve seen them do it at least five or six times!
So two out of three Boston shows were outstanding, a great end to the first leg of Vertigo… the fall shows seem a long way off.
