It is now several days after the show and I still can barely muster a Homer Simpsom-like "Ahhhhhh" in response to "How was the concert?"
Seeing my favorite band (favorite since 1981, woah am I really that old? Are Bono and the Boys too?) for the first time in 13 years required some skill and money. Luckily I was able to get an airmiles flight from Deadmonton to my favorite city (and former residence). Let's just say that the ticket price was well worth it (ebay, say no more...I just found this site today).
I never in my wildest dreams had thought that the energy and exuberance of past shows (some of which I have attended and some of which I have been unable to) would be matched, IMHO. It was quite the ride!
The personal highlights for me had to have been the old material. When I read in Thursday's "Province" that they played "Gloria" I yelled out "NO WAY" and thought they would never be able to top that (and that perhaps I had missed the better show). Despite the fact that my personal favorite of all time was played on Thursday (Bad) but not on Friday, I was nevertheless delighted at the inclusion of lots of great oldies. Of course my favorite from the current album, "Love & Peace or Else" was excellent as well and I was made a huge fan of "City of Blinding Lights". The energy was amazing!!!
I haven't been to many U2 shows (Toronto 1984, both ZooTV in Vancouver in 1992) I was glad that I was able to make this particular tour. I was sitting in section 112 directly across from the centre line of the stage, and despite the other 17,999 people I often felt like I was the only person in the arena. That band has that effect on people! In fact, in 1992 only those on the floor stood, danced and pumped fists in the air. 13 years later it was the entire arena that was rocking out.
The guy sitting next to me was 20 or so at his first U2 concert, and the friend whom attended the concert with me was a U2 concert newbie as well. It was so much fun to share the U2 experience with new people. Actually, one of the more interesting parts of the show was the mix of people...parents with their children, single 20 somethings, teenagers...all rocking and enjoying the best concert of the year.
I have to say that Friday's show was the best concert I have ever been to, bar none. It was the best weekend in the best city on earth with my best friends with the greatest band on earth! Simply the best!
Rock on!
