I was lucky enough to win tickets on Radio One for the exclusive Hanover Quay Studio gig.Got to the venue at 7pm and watched them rehearse on the video screen whilst listening to the live radio show.We were well looked after and realy spoilt with champagne etc.
At about 8pm we were escorted into the garage where we had a good look at Bono's new Maserati and the bands other cars...Audi and 2 Mercedes. After meeting all the other Radio One DJs we were all escorted upstairs to the studio and then U2 joined us!The set was absolutely brilliant with Bono on top form..he wandered through the 20 people watching and gave Jo Whiley(DJ) a kiss during Vertigo. The new songs were incredible and most people including my wife cried at the introduction to Miracle drug and Sometimes. We were so close to them it was unbelievable...could read the setlist on Larry's drum kit.Didn't even notice that Paul McGuinness was standing next to me we were so spellbound!Everyone was spellbound with these amazed expressions on their faces!
After the set Bono, Edge and Adam mingled with the crowd and signed a few things for me.Got talking to Bono who then invited us for a drink next door...they have become very good friends with the nextdoor neighbour.Got through security as Bono had pesonally invited us ( competition winners weren't supposed to go to the after show drinks ).Ended up having a pint of Guinness with Bono and chatting about Africa ( I am South African ).My wife had a long chat to Edge and he was a pure gentleman! Finally after about an hour the party ended and we were returned to the Clarence Hotel where we enjoyed our own party!
The best night of my life and probably never to be repeated.Still can't believe that it happened...I think I am still in shock!
