What can I say? Even at my 13th show this year, it never gets old. The boys were obviously energized and very conscious that this was one of their last performances in the US for a while. There were no big surprises in the set list, aside from Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses being covered full band after Bad, a cover of George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord, and a full 2 verses of Peace on Earth before Walk On. No one was pulled from the crowd, although Bono tried to get a little girl onstage later in the show. (She was about 2, and on her dad’s shoulders, but was too scared and wouldn’t go up.) There was also a young girl of maybe 3 or 4 – with a sign that said ‘My First Dance?’ - very sweet.
Bono sounded terrific, even at this late stage of the tour. The crowd was energized and excited, and you could feel the momentum of the final shows pushing them to their best.
The highlight of the show for me was during Peace On Earth/Walk On when Bono was clearly moved to tears. He wiped his eyes as he sang, all too aware that this was nearly the end. It has been quite a journey, and no one is quite ready for it to end.
That is why I skipped my flight on Sunday to drive to Miami for the last show…
