I came from Vegas to see the opening show. The biggest thing I can say about last nights show's is I was underwhelmed with the deja-elevation tour feel it had.
Seriously, for myself, it looked & felt just like the last tour. No surprises, no innovation, no re-inventing themselves as they've had in past tours. Evelvation part deux is all I can think of. Even the songs they did, there was no new spin, no fresh approach. They found a good thing 4 years ago, & now it sems they're fearful to give it up!
The same word came to me last night as it did for the latest album: Safe, yet uninspired.
Usually opening night is full with such awesome energy, such a vibe of whew, is this going to work! Last night struck me as very rehearsed, very smooth approach to something they've been doing for awhile. I would have expected to see this show halfway through the tour when they got their groove on yet had become bored.
And the cheese-tastic moment of the night? Bono "wiping his eyes" during a "heartfelt" rendition of Sometimes you can't make it on your own.
FFS, it was SOOOOO calculated, I mocked the moment for the next 5 minutes. And, I'll have you all know, I stuck my fingers in my ears & LA LA LA'd through the line in miracle drug I despise.
Highlight of the show? Hanging out beforehand with some other way cool, non troll like folks we encountered ;)
