What an amazing experience to catch our guys on the opening night of what promises to be an unbelievable tour. This was my first time in GA -- and it was definitely worth the wait and stressful planning. We ended up to the right of the egg, bomb shelter, ellipse, whatever -- very close to Bono's catwalk (thank God) and very close to where Larry comes out for Love and Peace (Larry up close is phenomenal, by the way).
I'm reading from other fans that perhaps their expectations weren't met -- I have to say that is definitely not the case for me. I put a hell of a lot of time and energy into organizing myself and seven girlfriends to their leave kids (14 between us!) home in Salt Lake City for the Easter weekend to witness U2 first-hand, and I have to say they definitely did not disappoint. I'm hopeful that I've converted a few non-believers/agnostics. For all of us 'real fans' (however you may define that), we know the reasons for making it to see U2 live at all costs, and we know that even on opening night, it will always be worth it. One friend summed it up when said the experience took her back to ther person she used to be, before being married, before having kids -- more of the essential self (look out, having an Oprah moment). For me, that's what it's all about -- no need to explain or justify that to anyone!!
Bono was in rare form, and looks better than ever. His voice was not as strong as it could have been in some points, but I almost felt that could be chalked up to being overly emotional and overwhelmed more than anything. Highlights for me were Love and Peace, white headband, drum banging, Electric Co., Running to Stand Still (and the U.N. Resolution), City of Blinding Lights, confetti, Sometimes, Vertigo, One, Yahweh, etc., etc.,etc.... The band was so on top of their game I was truly amazed. I'm not sure where they can go from here -- and how they'll top themselves, but I'm sure they'll find a way.
Thanks to my girls for coming with me. Thanks to all the cool people we met and hung out with. And, thanks to Bono, Edge, Adam, and Larry for giving me an even greater life and one amazingly beautiful evening in San Diego.
