My 11th U2 concert. I had to be there. After 9/11 I needed communion, to be with my tribe, to feel the joy that comes with this band. I drove across Midwestern flatlands to the University of Notre Dame, in itself a sort of pilgrimage for those who love college football. I took my seat close to the stage behind and left of Larry. With my binoculars I could read his setlist.
In Exploring U2 edited by Scott Calhoun, Steve Taylor remarked that U2 did not play "Bullet the Blue Sky" that night but that it returned in the following concerts. I have often wondered if someone on the U2 team had read my post in a U2 Google group on September 21, 2001. I've attached. We were sharing proposed setlist. I wrote: "Bullet the Blue Sky --- No, please no. We saw the blue sky bulleted." It was not played. For me, and perhaps some others, I was glad. The wound of 9/11 was still open. It had only been a month.
This was the smallest venue in which to see U2 since my first concert in Austin, Texas. Other reviews have described the unique atmosphere, the special vibe, the firemen and policemen. The band had it together. They elevated all of us in a celebration of life and Love.
