Boy, I don't know if I was as at the same concert every else gave a rave review to. Last night was my 7th Elevation show of the year, and I actually thought is was the weakest one. I was really dissapointed with the setlist. This tour has truly become a "Greatest Hits Tour" and I fear that U2 may become what they never wanted to be - a dinosaur band touring the 'hits'. With the exception of 'Kite', I think every song played was a single ("hits"). It appeared if the band were just going through the motions... At other shows in the Spring, there was a lot more smiling between band members and more audience participation/interaction.
I do think the Webcast played a factor in all of this. they were playing it safe (as they have done before with radio broadcasts; i.e. Dublin '93 without the Sarejevo link-up). and before any one says that this is the 1st performance of "I Still Haven't Found.." - it wasn't. They did an acoustic version in Chicago. The audience seemed a bit subdued. It was (as expected) a young audience from Notre Dame. And did anyone see about 50 students run into the heart just as the show started. I wonder if they work at the stadium, or just knew the staff and were able to get into the heart. May I'm being selfish in all of this, as this leg of the tour is for people who have not seen the show yet. But I hope in Chicago they pull out some obscure songs for a change. Even U2.com was bragging that the band were planning some something songs for last night. Beside "What's Going On", not much has changed since the last leg of the tour. I don't mean to flame anyone elses reviews and I am glad that you all had a blast, but for me maybe I was expecting too much (i.e. setlist changes). See you in Chicago! Cheers.
