A brilliant show!
I had gone to the 10/15 show in Chicago, and was in the heart there. That show was mindblowing, but this show (even from GC's) was even better!
Garbage got the show off to a good start. The band was a lot more active than they were in Chicago. Shirley Manson was prowling the stage and chatting up the audience. She even got a Plaza lights reference in -- although part of it was "I don't see any #@$*^& lights!"(Gotta go further south for those, hon!)
Garbage went offstage, U2's roadies set up, and the countdown to Elevation began. When the PA played the Beatles' "All You Need is Love", a big roar went up and the people in the heart started swaying back and forth. A little while longer, and it was time for...
EL-E-VA-TION!
The audience, though not a sellout one, was _very_ loud and enthusiatic! The KC fans always seem to know all the words to the songs (even new ones!) and sing along with the band. They did the Wave during BTBS, when Bono had the spotlight. And, during the breaks between encores, people would stamp their feet and whistle for the band to come back!
The band was in fine form tonight. Adam was grooving, Edge gave this adorable grin when Bono was pointing at him during a guitar bit,(and he and Bono were in a fierce fight during UTEOTW!) and Larry pulled off some wicked drum solos during the show -- and was even smiling a bit!
Bono was especially bubbly and gabby tonight. He pulled a fan named Kelly up to wish her a happy birthday, and gave her a kiss. He danced around the ramp of the heart, not really caring that he is _no_ dancer! He tried to play harmonica at the end of "Desire", but it took him three tries to get the solo down; he says he is out of practice! And -- during "I Will Follow" -- he told us about the first concert they played in KC, which was at the Uptown. They let U2 play there, but wouldn't let them _drink_ there, as they weren't 21 yet! Bono's answer: "Well, I can fight in the army!"
Those bits made me laugh, but other parts of the show made me almost tear up. "One", with the names of some of the people killed on 9/11 scrolling up the screen and onto the roof at Kemper, was poignant. So was "POE/Walk On"; the first (POE) part was done in an expanded version. I was deeply touched...
And ... they played "When I Look at the World". WHEEE!!!
