I don't even remember if U2 was announced as the opening band. I was an early fan, but no one else around me knew who they were. Bono came out and simply said "We're U2 from Ireland..." and then it was an explosion of U2, all Boy and October material. We all knew that it was a special event from the first moment. They finished, left the stage, and by the time J. Geils Band came out, the crowd was leaving. It was obvious that no other band could contribute to the evening. By the end of J. Geils' set, only half the crowd remained.
