Ohhhhh yes,
What a show it was, a marvvelous one. I had the chance to see the Irish quartet in New York this summer, and this one was better than in the Big Apple, believe me!
I love U2, I love their music, their style of rock. They're not like the other experienced bands, which they give us always the same old stuff that doesn't sound original anymore to my ears. With U2, it's another story!!! They're not shy to put other limits...
Some of my friends think that I'm an idiot when I say that, but I really and honnestly think that "POP" is the best U2's album that they ever made! It is the most workpiece of all. It's only in 2 or 3 years that the people will recognize all the work did on this LP...
But, get back to the show... It was a BANG at the start with MOFO. It's a great song to start the show, like ZOO STATION was the same kind for ZOO TV. I also loved the version of LAST NIGHT ON EARTH. With the split-screen with The Edge on left and Bono on right during the chorus, incredible my friends!
Bono took a moment at the start of the show to thank the people of Montreal, because the band love our town, love the people here and also because the giant sceen (which is the stage in fact) is all-made here in Montreal. So he said that "this stage was made for us and by us"!!! Bono, keep it going, you're the best!!!
In Pride, the "oh-ooooh-oh... oh-ooooh-oh... oh-ooooh-oh" thing was a blast... They know how to put the crowd in. Bono can do anything with a crowd. When he wants the silent for keeping the guitar of The Edge loud, everybody in the stands stop yelling and klaping hands... He's a great representation of the group. Without a doubt, one, or maybe, the best rock-singer of his generation! On albums and on stage...
One of
1 biggest moment of the night was the acoustic portion on the B stage. STARING AT THE SUN is obviously at his best in this type of playing, but I also liked SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY played alone on the stage by The Edge. It was smooth and great. It was great to ear a new version of this tune... really great...
In my opinion, the best song of this show is PLEASE, musically and visually. And you can see that the band simply LOVE to play this song... The feeling really got out on this one! One of the best part of the show is obviously the "lemon thing". All of my firends who was with me was knowing that the four musicians will use this huge lemon as a starship to get on stage before DISCOTHEQUE... And they had an idea of what it will look like, we saw all that on MuisiquePlus (the music-video channel here in Quebec). But I saw their face when to moment arrived... They looked like 5 litle babies... their mouth open and their eyes big opened! A moment that will be in my head for a long time!
And what to say about HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME? This one is really suited to his show... I love this tune the way they made it... It was also brillant in New York this summer! I loved the connection with the late "Mister MacPhisto"... Great idea and concept!!! This song, like MOFO, is the most intraspectve for Bono! Read the lyrics carefully and you will see what I'm talking about...
And MY FAVOURITE SONG was the last of the show. I was so happy to hear this one. On the first and second leg of this tour they never did it, or maybe 2 or 3 times not more. But from the start of the third leg part, they did it some nights!!! This song is called WAKE UP DEAD MAN, one of my best on POP. On the beginning of the tour, my friends and me was putting together a serie of song that we would like them to play, and the last song of the show was WAKE UP DEAD MAN on my list! This song fit very well at this moment, at the last turn to the year 2000.
It'a sure that this show contained a lot of stuff from the Joshua Tree album, a masterpiece for this band, but I would like for them in the future, to play more songs that all of the 4 musicians want to play. I don't want to say here that they don't appreciate to play all this songs on stage now, but I would like to hear more songs that we don't here everyday on radio, songs that themselves will love to play in front of a crowd... you know what I mean? Some new versions of old and new songs that was not singles for their respective album!
So, briefly, it was the best show I ever saw of my life! Better than in New York. They used the screen more efficiently in Montreal! They had a better interaction with the crowd... and when Bono said: "VIVE MONTREAL, VIVE LE QUEBEC, VIVE JACQUES VILLENEUVE", that was it, we all noticed at this moment that we were invited to a great gig that night!
U2, you're the best it was, the best it is and the best it will be!!! Keep it going guys... WE LOVE YOU!!!
