I had built up my expectations for my first U2 concert for so long that even I was beginning to fear that there was no way they could possibly be surpassed. However, all my worries were laid to rest last night when U2 blew the roof clear off of the Saddledome in a frenzied performance that was etched into the memories of the lucky audience that Tuesday night. Even from my rather obstructed (i'm not a tall person) view in the GA crunch, the entire show was amazing from Elevation to Walk On.
What impressed me the most during the concert was not that they were REALLY there, or that the music was REALLY coming out of THOSE amps, but the power of the band's sincerity, and commitment to their songs throughout the night. No lemons to dazzle us, no clever jabs at pop culture, just an honest, all out, pull no punches celebration of what these songs meant to four men and 20000 of their new best friends.
The pivotal moment for me was the acoustic rendition of "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" which was played with such jaw dropping beauty that I, and many others, in the outer GA section forgot about getting "close" to Bono and Co. and just stood there, listening, many with tears in the corners of their eyes. This tour, with it's "carry on only" style elevates these four musicians from mind blowing performers to virtual magicians that can take some dead wires, sticks, and boards and make them vibrate in such a way that 20 000 people move to the same feeling, and leave with a new respect for music.
