First off, I went to both nights of the concert and both nights were fantastic, with the exception of the opening act. Kings of Leon, to be blunt, stink. They had maybe one good song, and you cant understand any of the words.
This was my first ever experience watching U2 perform. I have always liked their music though. I must say that if you can avoid it, avoid the floor. It really takes away from the effects that the stage offers. The first night I was in the stands, and the second night I was on the right corner by the baricades along the front. It is really something to see the band members so close to the fans, but if you are looking to get close, and experience the light effects try the lower stands along the side of the stage. You will be happy you did.
The songs they played were all that I hoped they would play for my first experience seing them. For some reason though, the show started out stronger the second night, but finished weaker than the previous night. Great songs were played though. Probably all their best. But two songs I wish they would have played, "With or Without you:, and "Electrical Storm", were not to be heard. They absolutly rocked the building with "Vertigo", and "New Years Day". One of the things that I thought was kind of cool was at certain points was Bono was giving a speech about Africa, and essentially if you support what needs to be done there, people were encouraged by him to text your name to "86483" or "UNITE" (spelled out on the numbers). If you acted fast enough, your name would appear on a scroll above the stage thanking the people (some, not all) who text messaged them durring the show. Then yesterday, I got a text message saying it was from Bono, thanking me for the support.
Considering the fact this was my first concert with U2, I would not compare it to a religous experience, but it is darn close. I think this was the best concert(s) and live performances I have ever seen. They are masters of how to connect with their fans. I came away from the concert with this feeling of that the music you already loved, means so much more now. You go into it with this massive expectaion, and when it exceedes everything you thought, you walk away with what I can only call post-concert depression, because it's over till the next tour. It was hot and humid in the Pepsi Center, no room to move, and everyone there was sweaty. But in the end it was all worth every second spent seeing them.
If you dont go to this tour and you have a chance to go, you are flat out crazy.
One last thing, if anyone knows the name of the song that was used right before they came on stage that was playing over the P.A. System, and was preceded by a "Clash" song, please post it, or e-mail me at Trektracy@Hotmail.com.
Thanks!
