This was my 3rd U2. I saw them during Popmart in the LA Coliseum, I was easily a quarter mile away from the stage. Next I saw them on the first leg of the tour at the pepsi center. This time I was maybe a hundred yards away. Last night I was no more than five feet from the stage. The view was awesome.
Let me just say that No Doubt is a great live band. They really got the night off to the right start. Plus, after standing in the cold, cold rain for hours, they really were a warm-up band. The greatest hits rocked, and the new songs were even better, definitely gonna pick that up.
No Doubt was great, U2 was transcendent. I really don't know how somebody can complain about setlists. Sure there were other songs that I would've enjoyed hearing, but if they played every single song they ever wrote, there would be casualties. As it is, the twenty songs they did play simply were awesome. The energy and emotion they pack into those two hours is unbelievable. The explosion of Elevation and the tenderness of One hardly seem like they should be played in the same show, but U2 makes it always work. Plus the way songs change and evolve when played live coupled with world events make some moments almost eerie. When U2 played "New York" here in April is what a fun rocker... now it had a bittersweet tinge to it. The shadows on the screens with shapes that looked like skyscrapers was very spooky. Walk On has definitely evolved into a song of healing and celebration of life that I didnt really feel as strongly as I do now.
Just gotta say that the guy who played All Along the Watchtower with the band...way to go. The song rocked, a great surprise and you did damn well. Plus when you gave Edge and Bono your picks... that was just pricless. Thank you.
If you plan on seeing them on one of the remaining dates and you're worried about the setlist... don't even think twice about it. If they played the exact same songs every single night, they would still be putting on the greatest show on earth.
