Once again, U2 put on an amazing performance with a masterful mix of new and old songs. From start to finish, the band was electrifying and played with passion and enthusiasm. I attended both shows in Chicago and the Toronto performance had the same raw emotion from Bono and the boys.
However, the crowd in Toronto was absolutely awful. The only time anyone stood up and shook the stadium was when Streets was played. Up until then it was more like a wine and cheese cocktail party instead of show by one of the top 3 rock bands of all time. The only place where I saw any electricity and enthusiasm from the crowd was down on the floor.
City of Blinding Lights? Nobody sang or did the arm motions to "Oh! You! Look! So! Beautiful!" Vertigo? That barely got half the crowd up singing "Uno! Dos! Trace! Catorce!" Elevation? Same thing in the parts the TRUE FANS know where to scream. And worst was Sunday, Bloody Sunday. Fans didn't even know it was that song until Edge started with the guitar riff. Hello!?! Larry starting with the drums isn't a dead giveaway?
I got the impression that this was just a large social gathering in which people could get up the next day and tell their friends and coworkers that they went and saw U2 last night. It's sad that people pay from $50-$250 and don't even know what they are paying to see. It's not like Bono didn't try, frequently inserting comments about the TTC, Front St., Toronto, and Canada "The half-continent nation" into his segues.
If I were U2 and the concert organizers, I would take I a good hard look at ever bringing a show back to this city. The citizens of Toronto should be ashamed for their poor showing.
