I've seen U2 numerous times before and this is the first time I've been frustrated with the show. Seriously frustrated. There was nothing (that I could see) wrong with the performance of the band, they had energy and the crowd hanging on every note. The stage was beautiful. It would have been great if that stage shape was replicated in a stadium instead though, as this scale is way to small for it, forcing extra seating to be placed behind the stage (it should *not* have been).
What I missed in this show was the view. I sat behind and to the left of the stage and I couldn't see more than 25-45% of the show. The rest Bono was standing on the tip of the heart where the lighting and stage equipment hid his performance from me. If the overhead monitors had been on during the entire show rather than for the half dozen songs they were then it might have been watchable. Additionally, the pop up video screens don't have a back to them. Great guys, show the crowd something and keep us blind as to what the heck is going on. Prime exampe, what was gonig on during Charleton Heston's speach?
Add to my frustration that San Diego sold out faster than some other venues yet we got no extra nights.
But, I am happy I did get lucky enough to go. It improved a tarnished image left from their last visit to San Diego (stop #2 on Popmart). It also reaffirmed why I like U2: great songs and great performances (when you see them) leading to a great time. Next time I hope the ticket prices are warranted by the band's (visible) performance.
