Well, after seeing a total of 14 shows-(war/unfire/amnesty/jt indoors and out/zoo tv indoors and out/pop), I've gotta tell ya something....last night was the best U2 show I've ever seen, and I don't say that lightly-especially with 18 years worth of shows to compare it to. Bono's voice was in great shape, and as far as energy goes, it was clear after the first 3 songs that this was a special night in the making, in fact by then they had already eclipsed thursday's energy level. Bono himself said "last night was very special, and tonight we're gonna take it even further-we've never played this song in front of anyone before, this is kite" they played it beautifully. I was shocked and thrilled as they broke out of the box and started changing the set list, especially when Bono and Edge launched into "stay".In all they switched out 4 songs from thursday, replacing "gone" with "kite", and "ground beneath" and "desire" with "angel of harlem" and "stay". Hearing a FULL BAND version of "all i want is you" was like winning the lottery, as this is the first time I've ever heard them do the song in non-excerpted form, not just bono and edge doing a 45 second snippet of it, but the whole song with larry and adam participating! "New York" was a standout as well, with Edge playing the main theme to "midnight cowboy" over the song's intro, and Bono doing an imitation of Ratzo Rizzo's walk as he worked his way around the heart. Just as important to this show was one of the best AUDIENCES I've seen in a while, y'all knew what you were getting didn't you?! At one point during "sunday" Bono grabbed a union jack flag at the front of the heart and bundled it up with the Irish tricolor, causing a lot of fans to start booing, he immediately exhorted the audience with his hands to go the other way, and louder cheering took over-making the point of the song abundantly clear! During his introductions Bono said "You've probably heard that singers are divas...no, I'd like to introduce you to my three bosses!" at which point he said that Adam's main difficulty is interior decor, especially in the dressing room, and that edge derives sexual pleasure from putting together data. Edge whispered something in Bono's ear, at which point bono said "Edge says my main difficulty is not having a stage, no doubt referring to my being vertically challenged." One of the things I've learned to look for at shows is Larry's reaction, last night he was smiling A LOT, especially at the end-they all knew what had just happened, as did everyone in the arena. If the band release a live album of this tour, or a DVD, this should definitely be at the top of the list for consideration. If you were there last night, consider yourselves very fortunate!
