U2 and Chicago proved, once again, to be a great combination. And, tonight---the 101st show of the 360 Tour was all about reminiscing!
From Bono mentioning the week he joined his “band of brothers” and met his wife (who was in attendance); to the Berlin-era and Joshua Tree-era videos that played during One and WTSHNN; to introducing I Still Haven’t Found...as a “single off of our 1987 Joshua Tree Record for Island Records”; to the set list, which contained lots of 80’s/90’s song to please the “classic” U2 fan. In a way, it’s sad only three songs from No Line on the Horizon were played (have they finally given up on the album?)---I doubt we’ll hear much from that album again.
The biggest thrill was hearing One Tree Hill at the end! Bono teased the song, then said they weren’t going to play it, only to confer with The Edge (the professor) and announce they would play it---a great set up to a great song, which was dedicated to not only Greg Carroll, but to Chicago, as well.
As usual, tonight’s show was filled with commentary from Bono. He and The Edge had apparently spent the break (since the July 2 show) working hard to get Independence Day declared Independence Week (which according to Bono Mayor Emanuel had done---so no one in Chicago had to work the next day!), Larry flew into town early to do something (catch a Chicago Fire game perhaps?) and Adam had apparently spent some time on the beach checking out the wildlife (a veiled reference to paparazzi shots of Adam and a bikini-clad girl that surfaced on July 4, I assume).
He mentioned many, many people that were in attendance at the show including Sheila Roche (who all members of the band have a crush on) and various members of the One Campaign. He shouted out to the Shriver’s at the start of Pride.
All in all…a great show! The crowd was engaged and enthusiastic for most of the concert (exceptions being during Miss Sarajevo and Stay—unfortunately!) and responded appropriately when “asked” by Bono.
Chicago is your kind of town, U2! It really is!
