They only way to explain it is Morning Glow. That’s how I feel after last nights show. Watching an opening band and wishing they would play a few more songs only to forget about them by the end of the night.
This was my 7th U2 show 4th on the Elevation Tour. The 2nd one since the third leg return and it was the best. That statement is speaking volumes, because some of the past shows have always been indescribable. But there was something about last night. I was sitting in the lower level next to the stage almost behind it. The seats where in the 15th row but the section of seats in front of these had been removed. So we where about 10 feet above the level of the stage with a straight shot of the action. If this was one of the past mega stadium tours, I would have been sitting on the stage. A true back stage experience. All that for a $46 ticket. It was awesome to see almost the whole crowd on certain songs facing me and singing. I now see what the boys experience everynight, where do you sign up to be a rock super star??
Some of the highlights, well the first had to be Out Of Control, my first time hearing it live. The way that Bono talked about KROQ and how they were one of the first to play their new song. KROQ the station I grew up on!! Totally cool. I Still Haven’t Found What I Am Looking For and Pride, like going to church with 20,000 friends!! Man the crowd was into it tonight. Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bono pulling an Irish flag out of the crowd and caring to the end of the heart, where he talked about the Provisional IRA laying down their arms, and that there is no turning back, plus he got an American flag to clutch for the end of the song. Like he was the protector of it for that short moment. On Where The Streets Have No Name, Bono running a lap around the heart holding an American flag high. Kite, the intro about his father, not to many dry eyes in the house. The screens that drop down during New York projecting a subtle pattern of the World Trade Center on them. Being in the building the day before the disaster, it finally sunk in that they are gone. I finally lost it, but almost felt a feeling of relief after. It was that kind of night.
There are so many more moments I wish I could tell them all here. The last few watching the members of No Doubt sneak into the front edge of the heart right before show time, the members of the road crew coming out for the encores, like they came to tear down the stage but wanted to get there early, maybe they could sense the magic of the night?
I am soooo glad I ending up going last night, it hit me when Bono was talking about LA and it might be a while before we see them again and how LA was the imagination factory for them. I just know that this band, this time, this album, it is something that will never be duplicated. I only wish I had taken my 4 year old daughter last night. For that matter, I wish I could have taken all my friends and family, I know that anybody who was witness to this, could not leave with out a huge impact. Hard to put into words, I won’t even try…
Well boys see you next time, don’t stay away to long. I have to go, heading down to Best Buy to get my DVD copy of the Boston shows.
Peace
