Brisbane, Dec 8th 2010, Suncorp Stadium. U2 360.
I've now seen U2 twice - once for Vertigo, in Melbourne, and now for 360, in Brisbane. We had an earlier start here than usual, about 8.30pm, apparently due to curfew laws.
The stage is like no other - that is, 360 degrees without a firm backdrop for most concerts, and not easy to get used to - but it succeeds, because of U2's ability to work a stage. Bono, The Edge, Adam, and yes, even, Larry on the drums, can involve a crowd. U2 have great showmanship and presence.
The basic walk on stage at the start was somewhat desensitizing.
In fact, that was part of one thing that bothered me. The start of the show. More the audio, rather than the visual.
Usually bands play a few new songs at the start then work into some old classic songs, then mix it up for the rest of the concert.
Why isn't Get On Your Boots the opener? Breathe? Where is that track? It was only till the third or fourth song that we heard new songs like Magnificent.
In fact, the only thing I really found difficult to appreciate about 360, was the set list - it was a bit jumbled. Lacked a sort of coherence.
That said, I cannot help but wonder, if as these wonderful musicians get older, that choosing a set list that works from such a mass back catalog of songs is ever difficult.
A few other notes:
-At the End of the World - great. A lot of grunt.
-I'll Go Crazy - sensational remix. Wow!
-Speaking about Lennon and early years - very touching.
-In parts, the band was rusty, I will admit that - Bono had a drink during Magnificent - but they made up for it, by constantly working the audience.
-Aung San Suu Kyi and Walk On - stunning.
-The on stage chat between the band was funny. Paradise? Certain drinks? Profanity?
Having seen the Vertigo tour and 360 tour, Vertigo was better. But, as Bono mentioned, the fans built the stage, and we will always come back.
And for $99, U2 are worth your time.(And the sore feet!)
