I travelled from the UK to see this show (and have a holiday!) and it didn't dissapoint.
Managed to get into the centre of the ellipse which was fantastic and my position of choice in Europe last year..
Most people have commented that the first 5 songs were incredible, I felt though that something was missing. In my view, that missing factor was a song like Electric Co (or UTEOTW) which really took the show up a gear in Europe particularly as there was so much physical performance from Bono and Edge on the b stages. Instead we had a (great) I Will Follow performed from the main stage.
The show really build it's momentum after the unexpected rendition of Angel of Harlem. 'Sometimes' was magnificent, particularly knowing that Norman Hewson and his family were stood about 5 metres behind me.
Miss Sarajevo was better than I could have expected, seeing Bono singing it in profile under a single light (remeniscent of Running to stand still on R&H) singing so perfectly was breathtaking.
I expected to find some mid-section songs a bit of a drag having been to so many U2 concerts but the oppostite applied with those songs tonight. Bringing the boy onto the stage during Sunday Bloody Sunday was inspired even though on paper it may sound a bit lame. Bono sat the 10 or so year old by Larry's drums and had him should 'NO MORE' into the mike which he did fantastically and with real passion.. each time Bono responded with 'NO MORE!' matching the boy's screams until Bono was singing 'NO MORE!!' like it was 1983 again..I haven't heard him sing like that in years.
Pride took things up a level and Streets was the best version I have EVER seen (in 16 shows over 15 years). The crowd went beserk and Bono seemed to return the energy by delivering an unbelievable performance. It was sooo loud!! Bono looked genuinely shocked and really pumped.
I was hoping for the Zoo Station / Fly double whammy but was happy with ETTEOTW and an electrical extended version of Mysterious Ways.. Bono still seemed to be flying on the energy that came from Streets for the rest of the show..fu*ckin' brilliant.
Pary Girl was hilarious and Kite almost took me over the edge - truly beautiful and that new guitar section towards the end was spine-tinglingly good!!
Overall, Bono's vocals were really 100%. I felt that Edge wasn't quite himself on the night.. I don't know he seemed more reserved and only really broke into a smile later on in the set. Maybe that was just my perspective. The political moments were not over-done.
Thanks U2 and thanks to the great people of Sydney for an AWESOME day!!!
