What a show. The band and the crowd were into this big time. Bono kept making references to how he couldn't belive that it was a Monday night in Philadelphia because we were so loud. His voice was spot on and he completely nailed Ms. Sarajevo.
City of Blinding Lights is such an amazing opening song and performance. The intro with the Edge playing the slide guitar bit with the spotlight on him only as Bono appears on the edge of the ellipse with confetti raining down is legendary.
Vertigo was more rocking than I ever heard it as Bono added a Ramones tune I believe at the end of it. and The Electric Co was probably the highlight of the night. The Edge was on fire playng the solo right in front of us (we were on the rail surrounding the stage - our tickets didn't scan vertigo. Pics to follow tomorrow). but what a performance by Bono and Edge on the catwalk playing the Electric Co. as Bono added Bullet with Butterfly wings. They also dropped "The Cry" intro ala the version on Boy which took me by surprise.
Fast Cars was another highlight. it's such a cool song already but was accentuated with Bono wearing the cowboy hat and Edge's Flamenco dance.
Oh yeah, then there was that part when Bruce Springsteen and his wife joined the Boys on stage for People get ready. The ad libbing here was pretty funny. Bono started saying things like "Jersey Shore" and how Bruces wife was shy. (I don't really remember the exact lines.) Great stuff. They were all having fun which was cool to see.
Walk On was kind of a surprise. I would have preferred the Zoo Station opener to the encore like back in May but who's complaining. I was really hoping to hear Crumbs and Bad. I do think Bad was on the setlist originally (I heard Dallas souncheck it) but they must have ran out of time because All because of you began at around 11. So they ended with 40. Still they played about 2 hours and 20 minutes which is probably the longest U2 show I've ever been too. (This was my 8th).
By the way if your ticket doesn't scan "Vertigo" and you are in the front of the GA line don't worry. The rail is awesome. You can take in the whole light show and see the light curtain visuals and also have the boys in front of your face a lot of the time. They spend a lot of time on the eliipse. I was a little bummed when I didn't get in but I'm happy now with where I ended up.
To close, I've read people say that Philadelphia never gets that "special" U2 show. That U2 just goes through the motions in Philly. Well Philly got a special one tonight and I'm sure happy I was apart of it.
