WOW.
It's Wednesday morning and I'm *still* reeling from Monday night...
This was my second U2 concert. (First was during Elevation on 6.11.01, also in Philly.) I thought there could be nothing that would top my first U2 experience, but I was absolutely blown away!
I've read all the reviews posted, so I'll try not to repeat anything:
Amazing start to finish, of course but one of the first highlights for me was during "Electric Co." when Bono added the snippet from "Bullet with Butterfly Wings." It seemed very appropriate. Plus, I had always wanted to hear that live.
I was really stoked that they played "Love and Peace or Else" because from the moment I bought HTDAAB, I knew it would be amazing live. The fact that Larry brought his drum out to the center of the circle / Bono playing them at the end was just icing on the cake. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!
Next, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was even more heartwrenching than the first time I saw/heard it live. The whole CoExist theme just reminded me of how timeless the song truly is. When Bono pulled his headband over his eyes and got on his knees, I got pretty choked up.
Now for the encores -- I have to say I am a bit miffed that Philly didn't get "Original of the Species" and "Bad" as planned but you know what? Having The Boss there AND "40" was enough for me. (In addition to the other songs - for me, the acoustic version of "Walk On" was really neat to hear, I'm now ADDICTED to "Fast Cars" - awesome dance there, guys, and you can never go wrong playing "With or Without You." Amazing.)
I had always wanted to hear "40" as the final song -- think back to UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY (which I've been listening to non-stop for two days). And I loved the way each of them just slowly bowed out - the best part for me was when it was just Larry solo, drumming and the crowd continuing to sing over...Oh. My. God.
Does it get any better than that?
To close, Bono kept thanking the crowd for a great life (I recall this from my first show). I'm glad he did/does this, but to U2, I have to say: Thank *YOU* for giving us all music and memories that will live on forever. You rock.
