This was fantastic! According to the FREE london papers the biggest crowd ever at Wembley of 88000 after Foo Fighters had 83000. A friend working there said that at about 2pm officially they had sold about 65000 and tomorrow was a definite sell out at 91000! Who knows what to believe!
Sadly, Wembley is not what it was with H & S being so everybody is allocated a seat and can only sit there as opposed to the old stadium where they generally allowed you to wonder on and off the pitch as you pleased so you could enjoy a few songs right up the front and be battered and bruised and then have some respite sitting in one of the stands until you had the tenacity to rock and roll again!
It was the best concert I have seen in years since Led Zep at the O2 and of course Queen in their glory years....Bono and the boys have certainly still got it...but I think they need to talk to their marketing people as calling it the 360 tour and hyping all this in the middle of the venue is somewhat exaggerated! Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and some others did exactly the same about 10 years ago and called it 'In the Round' so it is not exactly new! Also, invariably and particularly the set up is going to favour some parts of the audience more than others! This was very obvious tonight as 75% of the audience was at one end of the stadium and in particular where the band came on stage remained empty apart from one poor sod who was so determined to enjoy himself he filled the entire 'backstage' area himself with his unique brand of dancing.
I am jealous...had I been in the thronging masses at the 'front' I would certainly have enjoyed the entire experience alot more but I was in seats at what felt very backstage.....
When I did get up to dance the person behind tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to sit down, so they could see! My retort was why are you here? just buy the DVD and then I went and danced in the aisles......
Sometimes you can't make it on your own...U2 need to forget the money aspect of tours and just play ROCK N ROLL!
