I think that the other reviews and the general feeling from this show aren't really indicative of all that happened. This show was more unique than it was anything else.
I think the crowd was a tad flat which is unusual for TO. And I think the band tried to pull the crowd out of the funk but 4 guys can't pulll 20,000. The crowd was by no means lazy, there was just something missing. That mysterious 7th gear that u2 has that no other band has just wasnt' evident tonight.
Vertigo was actually opened with the bass line from stories for boys which I thought was a nice touch. Elevation had him remarking that " they were a band from jamaica called u2". Still haven't found really didn't do it for me, but I feel it does have a place on this third leg.
Miracle drug was intro'd by bono saying Edge was not only fromt eh future but another planet. and that larry asked him " what's the future like" and Edge replied " it's better". This was the peak as far as crowd interaction went, I really feel the crowd resonated with the optimism.
Where you'd usually hope for that 7th gear to kick in is after the barrage of "war songs" LPOE, SBS, Bullet. But Miss Sarejevo suffered from technical problems and Bono was not on top of things either.
Bono included a snippet of old man river at the end of one just like monday night.
what I really thought strattled the borderline between genius was when he tried to find a girl dressed as a bellydancer he had seen before in the concert.
I love the fact bono rewarded the girl, but, he killed WOWY by delaying the breakdown, he cant' find her has to finish the song, goes through all because of you, and then during bad finds her, Now Daniel Lanois joining the band on bad
was genius, but because Bono finds the bellydancer and invites her on stage (which seems to take everyones focus off the song and lanois) it really killed the mood. Bono seemed like he was talking directly to that girl through his mike and it took the emotion out of the song a bit.
That being said the girl who danced was great. I feel like she could have been given a better shake no pun intended) than basically having to dance during Bad because Bono didn't remember where on the rail ( I presume) she was.
The problem is, it really let the air out of things musicall in a show that was sorta average by u2 standards.
Now don't think this is a scathing review, still better than any other bands concert, by a factor of 10, it's just that I feel like that transcendental gear wasn't there.
Could just be a mid week lull for the band, lets see what a day of rest and friday brings
