The last of four shows in T.O. ... I can't believe it's all over!
Adding "Discotheque" to the mix was fantastic! When I heard the opening beats of "Pop Muzik", I got chills up my spine! "Disco"isn't my favourite song from POP, but it was still awesome to hear -- I loved Bono prancing up and down the catwalk, posing like a fashion model! Classic!
I still content that while "The Ocean" is a lovely song, it has no business being in the first part of the set, as it really kills the energy. "Fast Cars" just keeps getting better and better live, such energy and spirit!
How cool that we were treated to Eddie Vedder -- wasn't expecting that at all -- and Daniel Lanois, too.
I sat behind the stage for this one, and much as I adore this band, I hope I never have to sit behind the stage again. When the light curtains and lighting rigs came down, it was harder to see (not so much with the curtains, but the rigs blocked my view), but the worst part was having a clear view of the teleprompter, so you knew *exactly* what songs were coming next. It's all fine and well to say "don't look at it, then!" but it's kind of hard not to, as when you're looking at Bono, it's in your peripheral view by default. So that kind of sucked, because it took away the element of surprise.
The crowd ... I can't say anything about the crowd I haven't lamented about before. The overall audience was loud and energetic and really into it (moreso than the previous three nights, but still much less so than other cities I've seen U2 in), but the section I was in ... jeez. Again, I was the only person standing up again during Arcade Fire and the only person standing up during "City of Blinding Lights." In fact, my section didn't bother to get out of their chairs until "Pride"/"Streets"/"Sunday Bloody Sunday" and then promptly sat back down again when it was over. Polite applause, very little cheering ... it felt like I was at a tennis match. I just don't understand how, when U2 is putting on the performance of a lifetime less than 50 feet away, people are not moved to stand up and cheer? How could their music NOT motivate you to get into it? Maybe it was because of the view, or because we were tucked away behind the stage (Bono didn't acknowledge the behind-the-stage folks as much this show as he did previous nights), but it was still really disappointing to be stuck amid a bunch of people who looked like they were watching TV reruns on their couches rather than the greatest band in the world.
Thanks to U2 for four completely fantastic shows! I can't believe it's over!
