U2 were great last night. The way they use the stage with their movement and positioning is very clever. There seems to be a keen sense of theater about the whole thing. I loved how Bono appeared out of nowhere on the furthermost tip of the walkway for the apocalyptic opener and Larry's sudden appearance and disappearance in the same place was very effective. The circle walkway really creates an intimacy and depth to the show. There were moments though when I thought the songs seemed unnecessarily laid back and perhaps a little dulled. "One" and "Mysterious Ways" seemed dragged out and although this is probably due to need to for the band to explore new aspects; it's their immediacy, which made them great in the first place. On the whole though, U2 proved themselves to be a mighty force once again and even against those huge guitars and blinding lights it's their geniality and heartfelt sincerity that resonates the most. As Bono said upon departure "we mean it man" and man, it shows.
