I flew out 500 miles from NY to see U2 in concert in Michigan. I'll spare you the reasons why, but I waited 15 years to see them in concert. Again, I'll spare you all my troubles in attempts to see them live over the years.
The concert was worth the wait. I've been to over a 100 concerts in my lifetime - from small clubs to large venues and seen all sorts of artists from various perspectives. This was by far one of the best I have ever seen.
My companion and I got there at 8am in the morning because we had GA and there were about 25 people already there. Met some cool folks. The vibe was pretty cool. Security however was very clueless and I wished they had organized themselves better. They let us in finally at 620pm and had us sign waiver forms and basically it was chaotic once we got in.
In the heart it was pretty free to move around. Not what I expected at all. The crowd was mellow and the arena was not even 2/3rds full for PJ Harvey. PJ I thought played a blistering set. I wish I could remember all of the songs she played.
The arena quickly filled surprisingly after PJ left the stage. I thought for sure it wasn't sold out but as soon as Elevation came on I took a quick look around and sure enough the crowd was excited and I was jumping out of my mind.
Highlights of the show: Gone, Mysterious Ways, Until the End of the World, Fly, Elevation, Beautiful Day, Walk On, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Stay, In a Little While, Bad and Pride. Contrary to popular belief I thought Streets sounded a little flat, and although I am from NY and can appreciate the song NY, it didn't appear the Michigan crowd really enjoyed the song. Although Bono did say Detroit, Ohio, I thought of Spinal Tap and was very amused. Bono also kissed the local photographer at the show during Until the End of the World, and that was very funny because she was dancing and surprised.
All in all a fabolous show, that went by way too quickly. Get in the heart on the wall if you can. It's the best view. Bono spends so much time on the ramps. I know that some reviewers have posted they didn't spend that much time on the ramps, but maybe they didn't see that Bono ran around 5 times during the Fly and spent nearly half the show in the point near and half of the fans nearly tore of his jacket when he fell in during Sunday Bloody Sunday. He also spent a great deal of time in the back which to me was a nice gesture to those fans.
Really great show. One for the scrapbooks.
