This show brought us full circle. We are fortysomething and saw our first U2 show at Rupp Arena in 1987 ~~~ the Joshua Tree tour. We saw the Zoo Tour in Cleveland, and the Pop Mart tour in Columbus. Now here we are back in Lexington for Elevation 2001. The show was great...most everything has already been said, so rather than review the whole show, I want to narrow it down to a moment I got stuck in and did not want to get out of it. I will start by saying that my wife & I are from Cincinnati. This has not been a good year for our city. A racial divide has been growing here for years. Last month it boiled over. We had riots, looting, curfews, bad blood between the police, the politicians and the citizens. The scars will not heal for a long time...... Enough editorial, now back to the magic moment. I have so many favorite U2 songs. "Pride"(in the name of love) is one of many, but until now probably not in my top five. When Bono & the boys launched into "Pride" at this show it grabbed me by the heart and the emotion of the song, the memories of Dr. King and the thoughts of how much we need him now took me over the top. Tears rolled down my face as I sung along as loud as I could. I hugged my wife and cried, smiled and sang all at the same time. I've seen U2 perform this song live three other times. It was always great, but I was never moved by it like this before. I just want to say that all Cincinnatians are not racists, and thank U2 for keeping the memories of Martin Luther King alive.
