In a word... supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (you can tell I have a young daughter who attended her first U2 concert earlier in May this year in utero!).
The concert had all the highlights seen on the first leg of the US tour (with the exception of a substitution of Miss Sarejevo for Running to Stand Still).
The setlist tonight was truly remarkable. Walk On and The First Time made their debut appearances of the tour, and Discotheque made its second appearance. In addition the show closed with Bad intermingled with 40 and closing back with Bad.
On Walk On, Bono forgot the closing lyrics of the song. It took what seemed like an eternity for someone to find the lyrics for him. It was fun to see them try to pull out some old material. The version was acoustic and it sounded better than the Elevation Tour version.
Discotheque had a grungy and groovin bass line that was cranked up in the mix really propelling the song along. The lighting of the song made you feel like you were in a small Discotheque rockin to some good band.
Where did The First Time come from? Bono said something about talking to someone outside the arena before the show about the Zooropa album. The rest of what he said was garbled (sound quality was a little off). Although I do not claim to be as knowledgeable as "The Answer Guy", I do not think that this song has ever been played in the United States. I don't know about worldwide (certainly not recently). The song really worked in the set list and it was a treat to here.
Bad/40 was a beautiful way to close the show and left us screaming out for more until 5 minutes had passed and the house lights came up. I don't think that they would have had anything to play left as a good closer as Yahweh had been moved up in the set (unless they recycled something really old like MLK!).
Truly a wonderful night. The second night in Chicago I would imagine will pretty much do away with the standard set list all together after tonight!
Thanks for giving us a great night and a great life U2.
