I have read some reviews on this tour from people upset about paint-by-numbers shows with little emotion. I'm not here to invalidate those opinions, I wasn't there and have seen the occasional lukewarm U2 performance.
All I can say is that I'm sorry if those people don't get to see a show as good as tonight.
There were slow points and a few clunkers, One in particular seemed disjointed. Beautiful Day was a bit flat. I would like to have heard something from R+H. But the highs were just unreal. Bad mixed with First Time was spot-on perfect. Streets was amazing as usual, I'm spoiled by this one as I've yet to be disappointed by this song live. The best though, was the mood/playfulness in the encores, from the Fast Cars dancing to the All Because of You that just rippped, I don't like the song that much but it was fantastic tonight. OOTS was great as well. Miss Sarajevo was a revelation-Bono's voice was phenomenal. His speech before the song gave context as well, there are a lot of people who don't even know that song exists. Their loss. Pride even had some fire tonight, which it hasn't the last few shows I've seen. Edge was foot stomping and guitar-swinging from gun to gun. Adam seemed a little reserved, which he hadn't the last Vertigo show I saw in Chicago.
No, the band aren't perfect. But there's no need to nitpick on a night like this. Larry's taking Bono's hat off the mic stand as he left was letter perfect for the mood of the night. Thanks guys-I'm fired up to face the world tomorrow.
You know I believe it.
