It was opened by vice president Richard Nixon in 1959 and closed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in 2016. It was demolished soon after to make way for MLS' Los Angeles Football Club's new stadium.

The arena's main tenant was the University of Southern Californian's mens basketball team which played at the arena from 1959 through 2006. It was briefly home to the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers in the 1960's, the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers in the 1980's and 1990's, and the NHL's Los Angeles Kings in 1967.

Los Angeles Memorial was a major stop for many major concert tours including Pink Floyd's the Wall, Madonna's Blonde Ambition, Michael Jackson's Bad, and U2's original Joshua Tree Tour. It was also the location for the championship scenes in the Rocky and Rocky II films, it served as the euthanasia center in the Charlton Heston film Soylent Green, and it was the site Hulk Hogan's steel cage match with King Kong Bundy in the WWF's Wrestlemania 2.

Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena was located at 3939 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, California.
