Its been a couple of days...but I'm still reeling from an incredible show. I've seen U2 perform 8 times over a number of years. Wednesday night's show was far and away the best one I've ever been to.
From the moment I got in the monstrous line outside the Dunkin Donuts Center to leaving the parking garage...the fans were incredible. Thank you to those people who passed out burgers from McDonalds and grabbed armfuls of soda once inside. For one night it is great to imagine that love does rule.
As others have said, Party Girl/Slow Dancing/Wild Honey made the show memorable. But the energy of both the band and the fans made it outstanding. How cool is Larry? I have to say I was dissapointed he didn't sing, I think we all thought he would for a second. But I guess we should all count ourselves lucky to be able to take part in what should be a night he'll look back on fondly (a stage hand was taping the entire night on a digital video camera).
The highlight of the night for me, as in all the times I've heard it performed, was "Bad". We were able to stand on the right side right outside of the heart and Bono sang the first stanza right in front of us. An amazing moment I'll treasure for a long time.
I figured there would be some flag waving as in "Sunday Bloody Sunday", but I was unprepared for "One". A friend had seen the first show, but not told me of the tribute. I think that was the first time I've ever been to a show and been totally unable to sing along. I merely watched the seemingly endless list of names of people we lost on September 11th. That the names seemed to float up to the heavens was particularly moving.
At the end of every show Bono makes a point of thanking the crowd for the life we've given them. I hope he realizes what an impact U2 has made on all of our lives. It is we who should be thanking them for making music that has become the soundtrack to many of our lives.
All in all an incredible night. Maybe just great enough to sustain me until their next trip this way.
