If there has ever been the slightest doubt concerning the power, the nergy and the joy this band still brings to the people after more than 30 years this night has blown them all away. The courage of opening each of their concerts with two rather difficult songs is astonishing. With "Get On Your Boots" they had the place in their hands and didn't loose their grip until the very last note of "Moment Of Surrender".
One little sidenote perhaps shows how wonderful this evening was: When I went to have a pee after one and a half hours I was greeted by a men's toilet chanting "Sunday Bloody Sundaaayyy, Sunday Bloody Sundaaayyy".
This stage works wonders, and even though Bono seemed a bit tired towards the end of the show there were dozens of tremendous moments: the lights during "Unforgettable Fire", the crowd singing "Happy Birthday" for Nelson Mandela, three normal guys taking over the instruments during "Angel Of Harlem", and Bono often stepping away from the microphone to let the 90,000 capacity audience sing, as in "Mysterious Ways", "I Still Haven't Found" or "With Or Without You". All around there were people chanting, hugging and kissing each other and dancing around.
"Stay" – with just a singer and Edge on guitar – surely was a highlight, dedicated to Wim Wenders who was in the crowd.
The other 166 nights still to be experienced in 2009 have a difficult task upon them if they want to be better than this.
