by j Wilkinson (fan on the Piano)
My name is j Wilkinson, and I was the fan who got to play piano with U2. When I got up on the stage, Bono said to me “It’s in G”. I went back to the piano and started playing but the first chord was wrong. The Edge quickly came over and said “We are tuned down a half-step, so it’s in F# ”. After that it was fine. The energy from the crowd was amazing, especially when Bono said “Piano man, take a verse.” It was quite an experience.
When we got done and I walked back down the heart, Bono gave me a hug and asked me what my name was. I told him and he looked at me and said “J, thanks so much for playing with us.”
What a class act. The biggest band in the world, thanked me for playing with them? I was honoured to have had the privilege of playing with them. Thank you everyone for cheering for us.
This goes without saying, but thanks to Bono, The Edge, Larry, and Adam, not just for having me up to play, but for a great show.
If anyone has any pictures of this, I would love to have a copy of it.
Bono’s words before the acoustic version of “Please” were right on.
“When we try to create God in the image man, it is small, pathetic, and insignificant.”
I knew that they were going to have all of the names from September 11 during "One", but to see it was much more powerful that anyone can imaging, especially when they sang "They're reading the names out on the radio..." from "Peace On Earth" as the names were scrolling by.
