This is my first time attending the Grammy awards and as I was in the upper deck to the left of the stage I knew when they were loading in the bands gear and which guitar they tuned up what to expect. U2 delivered and the crowd responded with a standing ovation.
My heart was pounding in anticipation of the opening note just as it has on 9 different occasions when I had the pleasure of seeing Vertigo. Some of the other standout performances were Paul McCartney with a searing version of Helter Skelter, as well the Jayz/Linkin Park collaboration with a surpise appearance of Paul McCartney on Let It Be. Alas the Coldplay performance was polished- no doubt that song - whatever it's called is undeniably catchy; however, Chris Martin's foray into the audience a la Bono was stretching it a bit far. They have miles to go before they will have that same kind of connection that Bono and the band can achieve with an audience.
I'm still naturally high from the events of the evening and ecsatic that U2 swept all the major awards. In my humble opinion this album is more than deserving because the songs come from such a real place and this band gives so much back to their audience. I especially like that Edge took the time to thank the industry for allowing them to still make their music - because as we all know with the state of the music business a band such as U2 would never have the chance to develop into the force that they are now.
