Let me preface this review by stating that I was never an especially large fan of the band and it's body of work. A friend of mine introduced me to a song of u2's from the joshua tree called "one tree hill". U2 had always been in the back of my mind-their songs have been on many radio playlists during my growing up years, but I had never made the investment in them that many people I know do.
The one tree hill song really struck a chord with me. I lived in New Zealand for a year, and apparently the song is a tribute to a fallen roadie from New Zealand with whom bono was especially close with. The same friend who introduced me to the song made the voyage to chicago this weekend (from NYC) to check out chicago and take me to the concert.
Being my first U2 concert, I can see what makes everyone coming back time and time again. There was an energy in that stadium I couldn't really put my finger on, but I could feel it, and connect with it. I have no complaints on the set, what was played, what wasn't (except for one tree hill, which I was told isn't played anymore). My friend is a true U2 fan, in the greatest sense of the word. She showed me the famous sound guy, the bullpen where the famous people stand, and signifigances of certain nuances of the show and set and props that would have never been clear to me. She loves the band-has followed them for years and wanted nothing more than to share the experience with me. Having that kind of dedication from their fans to me is nothing short of amazing. I truly hope that's something they never lose sight of.
My only other thought about the show was when bono made the speech about chicago being a city of the future, and technology and all that jazz, I wish he would have made a reference to chicago being the location of the first nuclear reaction in relation to the name of their album, but I guess that's just me being picky.
