I was at the first Chicago show May 7, 2005 and it was WILD. When I walked in I felt like the ELEVATION TOUR was continuing. I can understand how some fans may have been bummed out by the show since at times it did stagger a tad here and there. I think maybe those fans in particular really LOVED Elevation, as ironic as it may sound, some fans DID NOT dig Elevation.
Anyway, NOW I understand LOVE AND PEACE adoration. What an entrance. I actually think it should always open the show. WILD ! I was to the left of the center of the Elipse on the outside and did not expect for Bono to come down, light the fuse and make the Bomb Shelter EXPLODE with that opening tune. Boy, for me, that was the BEST part of the show, by far.
As an ELEVATION and ATYCLB adorer I MISSED the last tour setlists (especially the beginning of Elevation, BeaU2fulday and UTEOTW --- but that was then and this is now, 2005) which is what took me to 8 shows. And being honest I really did not dig this show like those. And do not feel like going but once more. Not comparing, just did not get into setlist. Streets seemed already out of place since it was so well worked last time around. People did die down several times during this show and when Bono went off for the 2nd encore, but quickly turned around to tell ppl to wait a minute, I got the impression maybe he thought fans were going to begin to leave.
Regardless, IT WAS AMAZING anyway. I so dig the NEW STUFF and that is what I enjoyed the most. It is 2005 and that is where I am. U2 has been around for so long, their are so many walks of life at their concerts that it is hard to please them all, and they do do it anyway. But in the interum, they get bored.
Elevation and Beau2fulday were awesome, but I was ready to move onto Bomb songs (Yahweh, ABOY, etc).
The reason I love being close is cuz I like to watch the guys, and I did get the impression that in the midst of their insane lives, they are to at times insecure about what they are doing, hence Adams effort to liven up the crowd during these shows.
It is just they have done so many different things, you have diversified variation of needs on hand to witness this great band.
Like I said, it is 2005 and more than anything, I loved the new stuff THE MOST. Especially LOVE AND PEACE. What a beginning ! Vertigo was corporatley complete and City of Blinding Lights was so heart felt and inspiring. Sometimes breaks the heart, makes everyone think of those crazy relationships that don't work. Miracle Drug was special as was Yahweh and ABOY was a rockin.
I LOVE U2. They are good guys and funny. I don't think they take themselves seriously as Rock Stars and that is what connects with the audience.
