This was my first U2 show ever. Kyle and I drove up from Indianapolis. We arrived at the United Center right at 7:45pm. As we walked in, we could hear Dashboard Confessional playing. We took our seats behind the stage and listened to them for a bit. The lead singer had a great voice but after awhile, the songs all started to sound alike. My husband and I stepped out to walk around, drink a couple of beers and buy t-shirts.
We went back into the arena at around 8:45, and the excitement in the air could have been cut with a knife. Right on queue, at 9:00pm, U2 started up with "City of Blinding Lights." I thought this was an excellent opening to the show and I think it fit the venue perfectly. The crowd in our section; 327 was on their feet and ecstatic. We were became even more ecstatic when Bono came around to the back side and acknowledged us (gave us love); we gave the love right back with interest. After "City" came "Vertigo", and I really enjoyed the opening to that one. Once Bono shouted "Uno, Dos Tres... Catorce" the entire section went ballistic. It was a huge adrenaline rush.
I was very impressed with the lights show (even from behind the stage what I saw was quite good). The sound was excellent. I was a little worried after hearing Dashboard Confessional (there was a lot of bass and we couldn't clearly hear the words of the lead singer). However, for U2, the bass was right, the drums were right, Edge rocked and you could hear almost every word Bono sang clearly.
I am familiar with most of U2's songs but I really enjoyed hearing some of the songs I'd never heard before. For example: 40, Ocean, Fast Cars.. et al.
Highlights:
In a Little While - My all time favorite U2 song. He didn't sing the whole song but the intro verse was a nice transition into the next song
SYCMIOYO- Very heartfelt and emotional
Miss Sarajevo-Bono hit every note beautifully
Elevation-I have always loved hearing this one live (from dvds of the Elevation tour)
Fast Cars- The song was great!! The girl Bono pulled up from the crowd danced brilliantly.
Yahweh- I loved the acoustic version of this song and it was done beautifully.
All in all, it was an excellent show. Adam, Larry, Edge and Bono are excellent entertainers. The crowd was great. Everyone was excited, energized, friendly and accomodating. The staff at United Center were very organized and did a good job with the crowd from where we came in and out of the arena.
I look forward to their next tour where I will shoot to get into the elipse or outside of it.
I'm still enjoying my U2phoria!!
